This week, I had a super fun exchange of words with Corina Barnick. She's fun, energizing, and is our sponsor! Woo hoo! Enjoy!

Elise: Okay lovely Corina, so here's my first question for you.. no cheating! We know you're a beach going gal..empty your bag.. tell us what's in it!

Corina: Haha, ooh I love this question! It makes me think of summers and beach days at Sano. Okay, Clean water, chapstick, a good book - preferably John Steinbeck or something of a similar asthetic - an avocado, some sea salt and cayenne pepper (the perfect take-along snack), sunglasses, a beach blanket, and wax if I can remember to grab it. Over the years, I've gotten to the point of bringing just the necesseties...most days I just have my wetsuit, a towel and my board in tow. And maybe some tea.

Elise: Right on! I love the snack.. I always have snacks too. What are some current trends you are really loving, and what is the one "go-to" thing in your closet currently?

Corina: Oooh, you are such a good interviewer! These are fun. Well, in regards to a current trend I love - my family has both Native American and Hispanic ancestry, so I've always had a strong reverence for all things relating to these two similar yet different cultures. Right now it seems that tribal themes are everywhere, from jewelry to apparel to accessories and beyond, which is super exciting because a lot of it is exactly what I would want to make for myself (had I the know-how or skill). So, I guess you could say that I'm really loving the ethnic-awareness in today's fashion trends. My current go-to item is a military green button-up jacket with a faux fur-lined hood and long split coat-tail in back, made by RVCA. It's perfect for this year's can't-make-up-it's-mind weather conditions. Light-weight but warm, and goes with just about everything.

Elise: Beautiful! Ethnic awareness.. I like that! I'm really hoping that the trend of the tribal and earth inspired pieces are a sign that we as a human race are now paying more attention, if you know what I mean. What are you listening to lately? Any songs or artists we should check out?

Corina: I know what you mean! I love that people are becoming more aware...or at least it seems that way? Haha. Hmmm, listening... Sean Hayes is an artist I recently found on Pandora. He's got a creamy, yet rough-ish voice, reminiscent of Iron and Wine's Samuel Beam or Damien Jurado, and has a really great up-tempo style with a woodsy feel...ver' nice. Iron and Wine will always and forever be a favorite of mine, and Mason Jennings runs in a similar vein. One artist I REALLY really do love though, who most people don't understand or simply don't like, is on miss Joanna Newsom. In my opinion, she is honestly one of the most inventive and interesting female artists out there; She has a Bjork-esque asthetic, in that you have to listen to her a few times to actually begin to appreciate what she's doing. Most people just write her off because they don't like her little girl - slash - old lady voice. Her latest album "Have One on Me" had me captured for weeks. I grew up with a bluegrass influence (My dad has played in the same band for over 30 years), so I tend to gravitate more towards acoustic artists, or those with a more "natural" sound - if that's even a real musical term?

Elise: I love that you don't care what others think! Whatever melody your heart loves is what you should play! I'll have to check her out! And I'm not sure if it's a musical term, but I know what you mean. Are you a musician yourself?

Corina: Haha no, I'm not. I really wish I were though...my dad tried to teach me how to play the Mandolin when I was five, but I complained that it hurt my fingers and then ran outside and resumed my uber important one-man soccer game. I've been thinking more about teaching myself something lately. The banjo and the 'uke seem to call out to me...or maybe I just like the way they look? I'm not sure which it is...

Elise: The banjo seems fun! So much soul! Uke I feel like would be pretty easy to learn. Okay so we know you surf.. or just like the smell of wax in your bag.. tell us about your quiver. Which board is your favorite and why?

Corina: Ohhhhh dear....yes I surf as often as I can. I've been riding a 10'0 Dano "Hog" for the last 2 1/2 years and let me tell you - we are as in love today as we were the day I picked her up at the shop. She's big, she's heavy, and she does all the work for you. I seriously get comments about how long I've been riding this same board, but I DO NOT CARE - it is just too fun not to ride. Actually, the FIRST "Hog" I rode was that of a friend, and he let me borrow it to see if I would want one. He was selling his last week and I bought it - so now I have TWO 10'0 Hogs, just in different colors. I guess you could say I'm twice as happy now as I was with just the one. I also have a 10'0 Wegener (do I sound redundant?), a 9'0 Kookbox that my boyfriend got me to take to France last year (all my other boards are glass-on's), a 9'2-ish Morty (shaped by a friend on the Central Coast), and a 7'6" Robert August/Mike Minchinton swallow-tail. I usually only ride that funky mid-length when it gets overhead. Wow. I didn't realize I had that many...ha!

Elise: Doesn't that feel good, when you realize you have a super rad quiver going? I'm envious of your collection lady! Where are all have you surfed, and what's your current home break?

Corina: Yes, I suppose it does! Welllllllll, let me see here...I grew up on the Central Coast, near Morro Bay, so when I started surfing consistently it was up there. My brother has lived in Orange County for almost 10 years now, so he taught me at the beginning. I think the first couple places I ever surfed were at Bolsa Chica and San Onofre. Then, back home, my parents and sister would take me to surf around Morro and Cayucos, and then when I could drive myself, I was over there every single day, rain or shine, after school and on weekends. After a little while, I made friends with the communities over there and made some of the best friends I've had there. A lot of times, if the surf wasn't good in town, we would drive north to Big Sur and surf Sand Dollar, or even further north to Santa Cruz (mmmmm, Pleasure Point....). When the waves would get too big up North, and they did often in the winter, I would make the trek down to Santa Barbara, where Rincon became my new obsession. After making that drive ump-too may times, I decided to move there. I ended up living there for a year and surfing the point almost every day, along with Campus Point at UCSB and El Capitan - all lovely right points. Over the years though, I would always come down and visit my brother and surf Sano, Huntington, Doheny - all those good places, and I ended up moving down here after my year in S.B. Like I mentioned before, I got to go to France this last year (first international trip!). We stayed in Biarritz, so I got to surf right in front of our little hotel, and also in Hossegor. It was during last year's ASP contest, so the waves were big for a good portion of the time we were there, but the small days were awesome. Right now, I mostly surf Blackies (just north of the Newport Pier) or up in Huntington, just past the cliffs. It's been pretty fun! *whew*

Elise: Don't worry.. I get just as pumped when talking surf too.. I think a little Corina surf flick was playing in my head fast motion style of all the breaks.. that's a groovy collection of waves you've surfed!

Corina: Sweet! I must say, I love the state of California and all the diversity it offers.

Elise: So tell us what your three greatest passions in life are.

Corina: Well, surfing has always been a passionate part of my life, ever since I started. At first, I just wanted to be the best girl surfer in my area (lame! haha), but then I realized how great it is for sharing time with friends and just making for a fun time. Surfing has honestly influence my life in almost every single way; It's given me the friends I have, my mental and emotional health and has literally brought me where I am today. So, that's one big thing...

Art and drawing are also very passionate parts of my life. I get so excited at the thought of sharing my thoughts with people through painting and imagery. And now, making jewelry, I love the idea of getting to wear an expression of one's self on your physical body. Just like beautiful clothing, it's a tangible and fun piece of art.

Finally, I know this sounds cliche, but probably one of the things I am most passionate about in life is family. And not just my family, persay, but just the importance of having a "family" network in a person's life is so incredibly important to one's well-being. I am so fortunate and blessed to have grown up in a loving (and large) family, that always supported me in things I wanted to do and, over the years, I have come to appreciate my parents, grandparents and four brothers and sisters more and more. Having these people in my life is a constant source of joy and encouragement that I find to be so uplifting.

Elise: Surfing, creating, and family. That's all a girl needs right? Let's talk about your jewelry! Honestly the Quartz Crystal Necklace I recently purchased never comes off from around my neck. I simply ADORE it. Tell us the story of your line Indigenous Peoples.

Corina Barnick: Yes, I believe a simple life is a happy one. Well, I realized I could make jewelry a couple of years back, when I was going to be "Pocahontas" for Halloween. I decided that I wanted a simple headband with feathers and things on it. I couldn't find anything I liked, so I decided that I would attempt to make one myself. I just got some supplies from my local craft store and some leather lacing and whipped it up in no time...I had no idea it was so easy! After that, I realized that I could tweak and re-make a lot of the jewelry that I already owned but didn't necessarily love, and turn it into something that I did. I soon starting making items from scratch, with the feathers and leather and beads I had leftover from my "Halloween" collection and started making earrings for myself. After that, it's all "history" as they say... I started wearing the things around town, and girlfriends would see them and ask if I could make a pair for them, and then guys I worked with wanted gifts for their girlfriends and spouses and so on, and so on... So, originally, I just wanted to make things that reflected my own personal style and influences, and that I could say I made with my own two hands (and imagination).

Elise: I love the earthy elements you draw from.. it's the reason I was drawn to your collection. What's next for your collection? Anything you are really itching to create?

Corina: Oooh, good question! Well, I was super stoked on those crystals because, although crystals and prism pendants are super trendy right now, I haven't really seen too many like those. I plan to find some new and interesting ways to integrate those into my jewelry. As much as I love using feathers, that market got pretty saturated pretty quickly, so if I do make anything with feathers, it will (hopefully) be something totally new and different. Other than that, I am just constantly on the hunt for new pieces using natural elements, especially bone (sorry vegan friends!), which was a common material in ceremonial and daily garments of native peoples of North America. I can't go into too much detail, for fear of spoiling it, but I've got some ideas... ; )

Elise: Ohhh so exciting! I can't wait to see! One last question really.. I know our readers are positive, creative, earth conscious, and love to be inspired by lovely ladies like YOU, what do you think people remember most about you and if you could tell the world one thing what would it be?

Corina: Toughie! Haha, hmmmmm..if I could tell the world one thing, it might be something along the lines of "look inward first, before looking outward at others". By this, I mean that it seems like people tend to focus on what's wrong with "everyone else", when really, we each have so many things we can work on in ourselves. I struggle with and strive to achieve this on a daily basis. We, as people, can always be better; we just have to start with ourselves to do so. And, as far as, what people remember most about me, I'm really not sure, but if I had to guess, I think it would just be the way I look (ha!). That sounds lame, but most people just remember me as "that tan girl with the light eyes" or something similar to that. I'm not very talkative to most people I don't know, either, so some might think I'm "mysterious"; I'm not, necissarily, I'm just pretty selective with who I let in on my life. That's my best guess!

Elise: Well thanks for spending the time to talk with me! It means a lot that you took the time out to let me put you on the spot after hearing about your mysterious ways!

Is naming a tiny human really this hard? Gosh, I had trouble choosing names for my pets! But you know.. if a pet name doesn't work out you just change it right? It's not on a birth certificate or anything. J and I have been bouncing names back and forth, and although we both agreed we will not 'officially' choose a name until she is here, it's really hard!! I of course have one name that I A.D.O.R.E. and I'm hoping, praying, crossing my fingers, and manifesting J saying he loves it as much as I do. I throw it out there every time the name game comes up!

Personally I think naming a child is a very intimate thing, and although suggestions from family and friends is nice, I think it should come solely from momma and poppa. YUP. I said it.. it just doesn't feel right trying to get used to a name that the two of us didn't bring to the table so to speak. Even though I do write almost every name down that is suggested.. it shows when the name hasn't come from one of us.

I have noticed now that I read EVERYONE'S name.. cashiers at stores, book authors, facebook twitter and blogger names, famous people, poor people, singers musicians and artists.. I even read ALL the credits at the end of a TV show or movie. Obviously names that have a connection with the ocean are near and dear to me.. so I look at explorers and gosh I could really go on! Can you believe this belly is almost in the 3rd trimester? Less than 2 weeks! Whew time flies!

**This is probably the most outward post I have ever made, and I almost didn't hit publish.. but as an 'up and coming' new mommy to a little girl ( eeep!!), I feel okay with it in my heart and soul. I'm posting this with all the love I can muster..trying to not have this be negative.. (too much)
Please disregard if it bothers you. Thanks! :)

I started to comment/post on a photo I came across the other night from a behind the scenes shoot with Billabong Asia.. I soon realized that maybe this was discussion material. I understand I might be stirring a pot here, and I'm okay with that. My intentions are not to offend anyone. I just need to get this out. Below is the comment I wrote, but did not send..

"Come on Billabong Asia! Seriously? You are promoting having your ribs showing as sexy? I have studied anatomy enough to know that there should be a healthy amount fat on the body so that your bones aren't showing.. A little disappointed in your ethics here.. think of the thousands of young girls out there that are probably not eating dinner tonight just so they can have a "Billabong body".. not meaning to offend the young woman in the photo.. again just disappointed in what you are promoting as an ideal Billabong girl."

DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT know everything, this is only my opinion!

When I was active duty US Coast Guard, I went to a school to learn about nutrition and what a "healthy" body fat percentage was, so that I could be the person at the unit that members could come to for nutritional guidance. I also learned in Yoga Teacher training about the human skeletal system, muscles, fats, and tissues in the body.. we studied A LOT of anatomy and nutrition. The human skeleton is in the place that it is in our body cavity in such a way that the tissues, muscles, and FATS protect it! The skeleton should not normally be showing through almost paper thin skin. I understand some human bodies have very high metabolism, but that is not an excuse to look malnourished. If anything.. it is an excuse to NOURISH more, treat your body as a temple and give it what it needs to THRIVE!

Just to recap, I personally am disappointed in the choice of model that Billabong Asia, an action sports driven company, has chosen to represent young women. I did look around on Billabong's multiple sites, including Billabong Girls US, and it seems that the Asian brand really stands alone here with the uber skinny gal in their ads. Am I crazy? Am I being too judgmental? Or is it that I care about the young women on our planet and how this ad might turn into their inspiration to "get skinny" and possibly starve themselves to achieve this.

I simply cannot wait for the sunshine to come out and warm things up enough to at least go paddle around in my bikini! Does anyone really surf in a bikini in Southern California before May? I seriously doubt this bump would fit in a wetsuit. Okay Okay.. I admit it.. I am really missing Hawai'i and it's warm water right about now! But to take my mind of the whole trying to find a wetsuit for a pregnant girl.. I decided to focus on some lovely boards instead.

This week I caught up with our lovely sponsor Dana Mermaid, I learned so much from chatting with her.. I simply envy her dreamy life. Go ahead, get reading! There's a giveaway too!

Elise: Okay lovely Dana, let's start with the basics. What are your passions? Favorite hobbies? Greatest indulgences?

Dana: The sea. Whales and dolphins by far are my favorite. I always make time to be with them, although I love all sea creatures including sharks. Inspiring people, living with a heart wide open and truly making a difference in the lives of another. I feel like I indulge in my heart's desires most often and am blessed with the freedom here in Hawaii to do that, either getting lost in the valley with rainforest and waterfalls, or undersea with my familiar dolphin friends, sleeping next to the ocean while whale song vibrates around me, and sometimes just sleeping in and just hanging out with my dog "Nalu"! I have a thing for shells, I've even had to bring empty suitcases to bring back shells on my trips!

Elise: Wow girl! Sounds like you just love living!! I once had a dog named Nalu too! Great choice in a name. If you could choose one quote that really resonates with you, and why?

Dana: “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson. I think this might be the one; there are so many quotes that inspire, but this one ties it in. I've always been know to dance to the beat of a different drum and in this somewhat crazy world we live in so many people tend to think their path is the right one or the only one. I think the most important thing to remember is that although we each have our unique path, our goal is to let our light shine and add to the beauty of the world rather than trying to be what someone else wants, this way we can serve our purpose here and truly make a difference. There is something for everyone.

Elise: THAT my friend is so true, and it is something I really admire about you! I had never seen someone do what you do..It seems as if all you do is play in the ocean everyday with beautiful sea dwelling souls, and you are often the subject for photographers. Is this your career or do you have a “job”?

Dana: Yep, this is my career, I'm a full time mermaid! I do occasionally get hired out as a free lance boat captain or dolphin guide, underwater photographer as well, so my mermaid biz does has a number of sea weed branches swimming off of it so to speak.

Elise: I'm so excited about this that I just giggled outloud! I'm in love with the fact that a little girl could say she wants to be a mermaid when she grows up, and SHE CAN! Who makes your beautiful and detailed mermaid tails, what materials are used for the scales and fin?

Dana: I know! It's one of the best parts of what I do is making the unbelievable believable! Having little girls look up at me with stars in their eyes is beyond the absolute best. I design and hand make all my memraid tails! There is about 400-600 hours of creation in each tail depending on how elaborate the design. The base materials are wetsuit material/neoprene, and then a fiberglass fin structure or a redesigned monofin that I hand carve, glue and sew. I have even used real fish scales on one of my tails!

Elise: I had no idea you made those yourself! Quite creative you are! Can you name one time while swimming under the sea that really sticks out in your mind? What about it made such a big impact?

Dana: I swam in the Austral Islands for a 5 year old little girl who is completely mesmerized by mermaids, she was squealing running up and down the beach (she only spoke french) and kept repeating, “la sirene, la sirene!” It was such a magical treat!

Elise: Amazing! Sounds like a scene from a dreamy movie! Where in the world has mermaiding taken you? Of those places you have traveled which is your favorite?

Dana: Mermaiding has taken me to California, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Bahamas, Tahiti, Raiatea, Australe Islands. They've all been amazing experiences, but Raiatea (in Tahiti) and the Australes are my favorite.

Elise: And you live on the Big Island, so you've got some beautiful places on your "done that" list! Whats it like traveling with your tail? Do you pack it in a board bag?

Dana: There's no other place like Kona in all the world. Tail travel is easier done by sea than air! I make quite the scene.. security loves me and they definitely know me here in Kona! I'm in the process of having a large case made that will withstand the airlines to make travel a little easier! The tails are an odd shape so finding them the right space is a bit tricky! I have special bags that they fit inside and I carry them on. Interisland flights they fit in the overhead compartments, larger planes I add extra cushioning and they get gate checked. They are seriously like my babies, so it's hard to let them be far away from me, one flight they rode in first class!

Elise: And I thought traveling with a board was tricky! You make finding sea life look like a breeze. I honestly believe you live in the ocean only coming on land to update your facebook and make me wish I was hanging out with you so I could experience your daily life. What advice can you give to anyone looking for dolphin, whales, rays, and turtles when venturing into the big blue ocean?

Dana: I LOVE you!!! I do live in the ocean and only swim up to update FB. Not all are seen in one day..it takes being out on the water a lot to have some epic experiences as the animals behavior, water and weather conditions vary. The Hawaiian spinner dolphins are the only species of dolphins that are nocturnal feeders, so they feed off shore in the deep at night and then come into the bays close to shore in the morning to rest and play all day. Manta Rays go where the food is, during the day they can be seen in the current lines feeding on plankton, and there are some sandy beaches that turtles prefer to hang out. With all sea life I always give a briefing, that out in the ocean these are wild animals and it is very important to remember that we are in their home once we enter the water and to swim with respect letting the sea life guide our swim. I like to match the mood of whatever animal I'm swimming with. For example, dolphins are conscious breathers so they rest differently than we do.. they never completely fall asleep. They slow their heart rate down and shut half their brain down at a time with one eye open one closed, swimming rhythmically and staying deep then surfacing to breath at 10-20 minute intervals. It's important to not disturb their rest, never do overhand swimming or chasing, never touch or feed any sea life, always let them come to you. When dolphin wake up and are playful, diving down and spinning or echolocating, then dive down too, do some somersaults! Sing through your snorkel making sounds and see if they want to come check you out, the more calm you are the more comfortable they will be. Try to meld into the sea environment. Look for spouts, fins, and splashes. Also how ever many dolphin you see on the surface, there is usually double that under the surface! During humpback whale season there are days when they are less active on the ocean surface which means there is a whole world of action going on below! I feel pretty blessed as I've been swimming here in Kona almost daily for the last 11 years and I know the spinner dolphin by each pod, and several by name from their markings.

Elise: I truly envy you! Such great advice, thank you! Just one last question for you wonderful Dana, any big goals for 2012?

Dana: I have seen a lot, but not all! Big goals for 2012, yes! Reach more people internationally to spread more of the ocean mermaid magic and truly reconnect the bridge from land to sea. I just recently became an ambassador for the Women for Whales Foundation and I would like to start a project with/for/and about mermaids worldwide with or without tails. A real mermaid is one who loves the ocean with all her heart (we do not all have tails), I hope to create more love and awareness for the ocean and all sea life, and continue to inspire the hearts and minds of children. I even have a really fun mermaid/surf inspired retreat in the works!

I have wonderful friends and family. I cannot tell you how special they truly make a girl feel! My amazing sweet sweet friend hosted a perfect, quaint and intimate shower for myself and baby yesterday. I could not be more thrilled about her attention to detail! We each hand stitched (with love) a little sleepy owl for baby's nursery, and created some other super special things as well. I loved the chalkboard designed by her son :). I am still in absolute love with the whole afternoon. THANK YOU LOVELY H!!

This week I spent some time chatting with the lovely Noelani, owner of Noelani Designs on the North Shore of Hawai'i. I have been swooning over her jewelry lately, and it was such an honor to get to know her a little better! Read on!

Elise: Okay lovely Noe, tell us a little about who you are, where you are from and what are a couple things you are most passionate about in life?

Noelani: My name is Noelani Hails Love, and I was born and raised on the east coast, in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1983. My mother is Hawaiian-Chinese and my father is a good old southern boy from Georgia. In the summers, I would visit my grandparents in Hawaii for a month or so, and was always in love with the ocean! I remember learning to swim when I was about 4 years old and loving the freedom of gliding underwater like a fish! My grandfather would take me snorkeling at Poipu on Kauai and I'll never forget how entranced I was with ocean life. The ocean is definitely a very important aspect of my life, being in and around it makes me a happy woman!

Elise: Beautiful! When did you decide to start creating jewelry and at what point did you turn your passion into a business?

Noelani: Being able to live in Hawaii is such a blessing, and expressing myself creatively with my surroundings for a living is a beautiful thing. I enjoy sharing my love of the ocean with my son and his friends, building their awareness of the beauty of this place.

I started creating jewelry as a young girl when my godmother (Aunt Helene) got me a beading kit for Christmas, and enjoyed the challenge of putting different colors together to make adornments. I also made friendship bracelets (with knotted embroidery string) in 4th grade and kind of lost jewelry design as a hobby until it was rekindled in my highschool crafts class, when I began to work with wire a little, and then again in my sophmore year of college at Washington and Lee University in Virginia--I picked up the hobby while making gifts for my friends for Christmas. Shortly after, in 2003, I studied abroad to Costa Rica where my head wasn't into books as much, but rather experiencing the artistic beachy lifestyle there.I began making jewelry passionately during my stay in Costa Rica, and upon my return kept making jewelry for friends and then began selling jewelry to fundraise for a school humanitarian trip to Nicaragua. I knew that as soon as I graduated from school, I would start my business...I loved Costa Rica!!

Elise: Costa Rica is one of my favorite places in the world! Can't wait to go back.. inspiration is easy to find there! Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?

Noelani: I find my inspiration in the colors around me in nature, mostly the ocean it seems like these days. Or the varying hues of pinks and oranges in the sunset. My natural surroundings are so amazing, and I get to recreate the color schemes through my jewelry.

Elise: Of all of your stunning pieces, which is your favorite or “go to” and why do you choose that particular piece? And which piece in your collection is the most popular?

Noelani: Oooh, that's a tough question. It seems like it changes once or twice a month for me, my newest design is always my favorite go-to design! Right now, I'm loving my Pikake earrings in gold in the XL size. They feature semi-precious stones of apatite, amethyst and iolite, as well as a blue chalcedony drop inside of a handcrafted wire hoop. They are super lightweight and match everything! I am loving my Sirena necklace now, since I've been spending a lot of time in the ocean this winter and feeling like a mermaid...

I've been living in my Ellen bracelet and probably haven't taken it off in about a month. I even gutted a fish over New Years with my rings and bracelet on...my friend said we should have made a video as an ad for my jewelry...

Some of my best-sellers have been the Delia, Lehua, Kumi, Tammy, Laneika and Pere earrings, and the Lody, Krystie, Arlene and Alish necklaces.

Elise: Wow, durable too huh? It's hard for me to choose my favorite from your designs, they are all totally my style, and would go with anything! I’ve read that you have created special pieces for Hawaiian singer-songwriter Anuhea.. that makes me giddy just thinking about it! What was it like to create something that you knew millions of people would see and love?

Noelani: I so enjoyed having Anuhea come over to my studio- she is so down to earth and fun, and was stoked to be able to wear my jewelry at her first Kokua Festival appearance. I made a customized extra large leaf style for her so that the earrings could be seen on stage. I was very honored to have her represent my line on stage, and was able to attend the festival and watch. She has a magical voice and heartfelt lyrics of a woman coming of age. I'm excited to see what she comes up with in the next few years.

Elise: What an honor! What advice could you give to anyone aspiring to be a jewelry designer as successful as you have become?

Noelani: I think the best advice is to follow your heart and be persistent. I got rejected so many times at first, and now I have a hard time keeping up with the demand. Keep being persistent, as well as patient, and create a good design and product.

Elise: Let’s change direction a little, you are a full time momma too! What is it like balancing your job as a jewelry designer and business owner with being a mom?

Noelani: It's a tough balance, and fun at the same time. I have to always remember to be flexible, because at the end of the day it all boils down to our health and happiness. Luckily, I've set myself up so that my commute to work is minimal (a 3 block bike ride away), and my son's school is one street away, so I only get in my car 3 times/week maximum. I'm able to be very interactive with my son since I am my own boss. I am really fortunate to have such a great community of friends here on the North Shore, so my group of mommy friends and I have formed a coop of playdates, where we switch off days of caring for the little ones. My son is 3 and loves playing with his friends, and it's more fun when they are all together, so I enjoy my day with them as much as I enjoy my time off. We usually go to the beach or go on a hike. I have set up a pretty good schedule as far as getting enough time to work and play. It really takes a village to raise a child. My son does come to my jewelry studio with me often, and he is just now wanting to sit on my lap and make jewelry with me, so it's fun to watch him want to get involved and help out!

Elise: I love that you ride your bike to work! That's one of the things I adore so much about North Shore living.. you hardly need a car! You sound like such a fun and radiant Momma! What music are you listening to lately? Any new artists you have recently discovered?

Noelani: My brother introduced me to Ratatat and Yelle, along with Edward Sharpe. I like the new age style, but am also really into calming meditative music, and starting to listen to more Kirtan. I love any music with culture, especially the PutoMayo Productions.

Elise: Nice, I love the energy you feel when listening to Kirtan! Great for creating! So, we know you are a gal who basically lives at the beach, so tell us..what do you carry in your everyday bag?

Noelani: Hmmm...well I usually take my pink backpack that my friend from Japan gave me...it's easy to tote around while I ride my bike to and from work and the beach. I always have my journal with me (for my constant stream of thoughts and ideas) and I've got to have my Pure and True Organics lip balm, as well as my reusable glass water bottle (gotta stay hydrated), a pareo and a swimsuit. I usually have an extra pair of clothes for my son too- he always seems to soak his clothes, whether in a mud puddle or in the shorebreak...I like to keep it pretty simple because I don't like to dig around too much for my things. Lately I've been taking my GoPro camera with me everywhere too, and taking short films of my son. The life of a 3 year old on the North Shore is pretty rad...

Elise: I bet it is! What a fun way to look back later too, our GoPro is one of my favorite cameras in the house! Any big plans for 2012?

Noelani: Ooooh...the big question. I'd like to see some more growth in my company, and hopefully some more international traveling. I'd love to start sourcing more of my beads through travel. I'm not going to claim anything and keep it a surprise...there's something exciting about a mystery...

Elise: Looking forward to keeping up with your designs this year! Last but not least by far, what do you think people remember most about you, and if you could tell the world on thing.. what would it be?

Noelani: Hmmm...good question. What do people remember about me? I've been told my smile is unforgettable. I must thank my orthodontist, Dr. Webb:) I do smile a lot, because no matter what language you speak, a smile is universal. And...why not share a smile? Everyone has a light to shine!

Happy Monday!
In November my artwork was chosen for the Annual Rell Sun Menehune Surfing Championships on Oahu. I am absolutely thrilled! The contest is sponsored by Quicksilver, so just knowing that they printed the tees and posters tickles me all sorts of colors! From all the photos (and video below) I've seen from the contest, it seems that the kids ripped, and had tons of fun!

Also, this past week I was busy creating away! I have been doing a painting a day to get some work ready for a couple galleries. I have chosen a few to be available for purchase in the shop, they are one of a kind and are ready to be framed.

New.Zealand.Obsessed.

Yup.. I know that if you are a regular reader you already know this.. and no I haven't been there yet..
"Hi, my name is Elise Nicole and I have a wild obsession with visiting and eventually running away to live in New Zealand." Oh, your not sure why? I'll explain.. New Zealand has a population of only 4 million, making it one of the world's least crowded countries. Do you need that in perspective? San Diego county, CA..where we live.. has 3,095,313 residents alone. Don't get me wrong.. I ADORE San Diego.. I'm just saying.. DANG!! I LOOOVE the thought of only 4 million neighbors, spread out on a friendly island about the size of Colorado! Anyway New Zealand is known to be a haven for those seeking peace, rejuvenation and relaxation as well as a playground for thrill seekers and adventurers. A temperate climate with relatively small seasonal variation makes it an ideal year-round homestead, although I've heard there is one part of the year where everything blooms and is fragrant and so beautiful! New Zealanders drive on the left, I've always wanted to try that! And although it is a relatively small country it can take many hours to drive between cities and other destinations. Perfect for just cruising with the windows down enjoying the lush countryside and ocean towns. New Zealand is one of the safest countries in the world with a really low crime rate, few endemic diseases and a great healthcare. Seriously.. what are we waiting for? It's in the top 5 happiest countries in the WORLD. The closest vacations spots are all lands full of surf. Psh..yes please! And I am really excited to try the traditional Maori Greeting- touching noses. Need I say more.. who's down for a trip to New Zealand?

I thought I would take a moment to share with you a few of the wonderful things I have picked up for our baby girl’s nursery! I think this is the most excited I’ve ever been about decorating.. and I LOVE to decorate. I want a warm, natural, earthy and feminine room that is full of life..without a lot of pink. (insert gasp here) Yes you heard me right, is that so horrible? I’m personally not a pink person.. that’s not saying our daughter is banned from pink, I know she will have a lot of it in her life, and I’m sure in many hues.. but it likely wont come from me. I'm simply saying pink will not be the predominant color in her space.

I am thrilled about how my ideas for her room have come together, there are lots of elements from the earth, reclaimed pieces, natural fibers and carefully hand chosen items that come from far away places. I have given a great deal of effort to stick to handmade and fair trade, either made by myself, friends, family, lovely Etsy sellers or purchased at one of my favorite stores like the wonderful ‘World Market’. If I had to ~~categorize~~ jumble some words together to describe my style inspiration I would say “sweet bohemia gypsy baby” is it. Here is one of the nurseries I am drawing inspiration from..yet I have a feeling her nursery will be a room in it's own, since a lot of the elements are coming from my head which is bursting at the seams with ideas. I am so grateful my sweet sweet guy trusts me with our daughters room.

Elise: I'm so stoked you are able to chat with me all the way from across the sea! My first question is to help us get a feel for who you are from your point of view. Which five words best describe you?

Megan: The best way to describe me would be to list the things that I love to surround myself with and that I love to do, so I would say: Kaua’i, nature, ocean, yoga, meditation

Elise: Beautiful! Looks like we have a lot in common! Tell us about where you grew up and where you are living now. What made you move to beautiful New Zealand, which by the way I am crazy about that place if you didn’t already figure that out, and what are the main differences between the two?

Megan: I grew up on Kaua’i. I was born at home on the west side and grew up in Koke’e. Yup, I was one of those Koke’e hippy kids along with my 3 brothers and sisters. After I finished undergrad at the University of Hawaii - Manoa, I got married to a Kaua’i boy and we moved to New Zealand so that I could do my masters degree at the University of Auckland where I study island ecosystem ecology. Kauai and “N-zed” are so very similar.. sometimes I’ll be driving and be like… “hey!! Are we in Ha’ena?!?” Lol.. but NZ is a whole lot bigger.. you can drive and drive and drive and always be somewhere new.. there is a lot of sheepland and fun accents and people (out of Auckland) are really sweet. BUT…the food isn’t as good and the water isn’t as warm as in Hawai’i, so I am still in love with my homeland!

Elise: Kaua'i is for sure somewhere you fall in love with and never really fall out of love with, so I understand! That is a really awesome MASTERS degree to be going for, thank you for caring for our earth in every way possible! What is the best advice anyone has given you?

Megan: My dad always gives me the best advise.. It's hard to say what the best piece was, but there is one thing he told me that I will never forget and that I live by, and that is to keep it simple. So for every situation, I just keep it simple and it's much easier on myself and others around me!

Elise: Simple piece of advice, simple meaning. Love it. Could you tell us a few things you are most passionate about?

Megan: Above all, I am most passionate about meditation. I just find that the best way to contribute to this world is to center yourself and when you are centered, all your actions will be of a place that is pure and natural.. you really cant go wrong. When you're centered, out will pour compassion, love, bliss. You will contribute way more to this world than by the actions of a person who is not centered! Therefore, I think everyone - politicians, teachers, students, conservationists, businessmen, children, alike should meditate! I bet we'd see some positive changes.

Elise: Talk about conscious!! What a powerful answer Megan. Couldn't have said it better. You are also passionate about jewelry making I assume, which I am SO stoked to have you as one of our sponsors, can you tell us about the jewelry you make? What goes into the process and how did you decide to make bracelets?

Megan: Ooh yes, I am passionate about being creative.. especially making jewelry! I just create whatever is on my heart at the time. Last year, I made all kinds of puka shell, sunrise shell and beach glass jewelry and gave them to friends. They loved them so much and encouraged me to sell on Etsy... I was soo amazed when people bought my jewelry!! it was really touching that other people liked my creations. Recently, my sister had a baby- Pa'akamana'o Matiu Lee- who was born with a congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome. It was amazing to see so many people on Kauai coming together to support my sister and her cute little ohana with carwashes, bake sales, etc. People from around the world are still praying for this little boy and he is in San Diego right now recovering from his 2nd open heart surgery (of 3). So on Etsy, I am now selling bracelets to try to raise money for Pa'a. When I make the Pa'a bracelets, I weave my love and prayers into them and send them off for people to wear! It's fun!!

Elise: Little Pa'a sure has shown the world what the meaning of strength is. I love your bracelets, and the most special part is what they stand for! Love, endurance, patience, healing.. I could go on. You have a very selfless nature, something I truly admire in a person. What quality do you admire most in another individual?

Megan: Thank you Elise!! Well, what I admire in a person is when he/she is present- not living in the past or thinking about the future; then that person can truely enjoy all the beauty that surrounds them.. and it rubs of on people around them.

Elise: You're welcome! It's so true.. there is nothing like the present moment. So what artists are you listening to most recently? Any certain tune playing for you right now.. in this moment?

Elise: DJ Kana! As in your husband Kana? He's a musician? How awesome! I'm listening now, and this is fun! I want to get up and groove around! Do you have any big plans for 2012? I have a feeling it's going to be a powerful year..

Megan: Yes!! My hubs is the best DJ ever! And I'm not just saying it! Hehehe!!! We will be rockin into the new year at one of his gigs 2012 plans?? Well... nothing like yours...being a new mom! I’m so excited for you!! My 2012 plans are to finish my masters degree, become a yoga teacher..that will be in February with Yoga Ashram in the Coromandel (NZ), then off to Australia for the month of March to explore "down under"! then move back to Hawai’i to be with our ohana. We miss them so much!

Elise: Awe thank you, so sweet! Yes my plans seem so big and uncharted!! Guess there's no better time than now to bring on more love! Yoga teacher training will completely change your life.. there's no other way to explain it than that. You will adore it, I'm sure! We'd love to catch up with you while you are in Australia, another place I am really excited to visit someday soon! One last question really.. I know there must be some readers that envy the creative, conscious, traveling and positive lifestyle you lead, what do you think people remember most about you and if you could tell the world one thing what would it be?

Megan: Hehe.. that’s hard to answer, so I asked the hubs what people remember about me.. he says that people think I am very positive and sweet. awww! thanks! If I could tell the world ONE thing, it would be.... “you hold the power to create a beautiful, sweet life for yourself. There is magical beauty all around, even when it doesnt seem that way. Some days I long to just be in the ocean, not doing a thing except listening and being alive.. I guess that's why I claim to have saltwater in my veins.

What a beautifully mysterious creature.. existing on earth for over 650 million years. They do not have brains, and use sensory organs to identify light, odor, and touch which in turn means..

they do not have the ability to be deliberately aggressive, yet an accidental brush or touch will trigger an involuntary sting which can be very toxic and painful, and in some cases even fatal. Whhaaattt? Simply amazing if you ask me.

A Moment with Kris Boline..Co-Owner of Green/Flash

We love the fact that Green/Flash is a surf art gallery that offers yummy visual candy, blissful yoga AND local live music. They honestly have me oohing and aahing over all the artists and events they have.. Co-owner Kris Boline was rad enough to answer some questions for us.. Go ahead, get reading!

Elise: Hi Kris! Our first question is in regards to your gallery's name. How did you decide upon Green/Flash?

Kris: My twin sister and co-owner of the gallery Ash Francomb chose the name as my mom always wanted us to glimpse the green flash as the sun set over the ocean when we were children.

Elise: That’s beautiful, I really love how there is a deep meaning behind the name! Tell us a little bit about Green Flash Surf Art Gallery, how did the idea come about to open a gallery, and why did you choose Cardiff-by-the-Sea as your location?

Kris: We had an art show at 111 Chesterfield Place in May 2010 with some artist friends and then we decided to stay after that first show and open the gallery. We chose Cardiff by the Sea since it is by the ocean in a beautiful location with a surf community.

Elise: Most of us secretly dream of owning some sort of shop or gallery someday, it looks so magical from the outside looking in. What are some of the things you love about owning a surf art gallery?

Kris: As artists - We love meeting artists and working with their creations. The space comes alive with their creativity. We thrive off visual inspiration...we love the ocean and it is so fun to see how each artist interprets the sea...we enjoy how everyone around North County is as fascinated with the ocean as we are ....we definitely feel like we are living the dream!

Elise: That’s very true! It’s the reason we were completely happy moving from the islands to North County! Do you ever get any downtime? It seems Green/Flash is always having some great show or party!

Kris: Whenever we have down time- we are often dreaming of new fun things to do at Green Flash! Or we are taking a walk on the beach :) or doing yoga at green flash yoga!

Elise: As a yoga teacher myself, I am always scoping out new interesting places to practice and teach. A surf art gallery seems so perfect! What made you decide to host yoga classes and do you have mostly surfers who come for your yoga classes? Where can San Diego locals and travelers find a schedule classes?

Kris: We wanted to combine elements that we love in one place, art, yoga and music...in a modern community center we call "The Open Center" at green/flash. We will also be offering art workshops for adult and kids soon!

Elise: Wow that sounds great, I could spend some serious time in Green/Flash, those three things are what make me who I am! Do you surf? If so when did you start surfing and what inspired you to ride waves?

Kris: I started surfing in my college days at UC Santa Barbara...the ocean offers so much freedom to me and that inspires me ...free to be free!

Elise: So true, you must be creative if you own a gallery, are you an artist and if so what do you create?

Kris: I am a fine art photographer and I mostly photograph sea scapes...but I also plan to start a series of yoga ocean portraits in the new year.

Elise: Beautiful, can’t wait to see! As a little girl what did you dream to be when you "grew up"?

Kris: A photographer!

Elise: If someone reading wants to own an art gallery or shop, what advice do you have for them?

Kris: Do your homework by creating a business plan first...and follow your passions and dreams!

Elise: Do you have a personal favorite artist or photographer, maybe someone's art you have to have both in the gallery and at home?

Kris: Lately my favorite photographers are Jay Reilly's recent surf portraits at Green Flash, Phil Gibbs waves, and an artist in Hawaii names Nick Chudeau...I love collecting art that is at green flash and I do have many pieces in my home!

Elise: Love Jay! He is such a rad guy to be around, actually you and I met at an art show I was in at his gallery. Thank goodness! So glad to know you. I’ll need to check out these other artist/photographers! Okay last question Kris, any big personal goals for 2012?

Kris: All that is a secret right now....but you will be seeing our new creation on facebook soon!

2011 was a whirlwind for this soul. I think I'll highlight some really beautiful things that have occurred. WARNING: This is a mighty long post!

I had some really amazing shows with my art..
Here I am beaming because I had just finished installing my first Solo Show!

Rode In A HOT AIR BALLOON (eek!!) with my love!
Honestly one of the best days of my life.

Took a 1000 mile road trip from Texas to Florida with my family, and dragged along one of my best friends.
Seriously looking forward to the next trip!!

This is just moments before I graduated from Hatha Yoga Teacher training.
Near the top of my life accomplishments.

Started a ~~dread~~ love lock.. kept it until my guy
had trouble running his fingers through my hair..
(which is obviously more important)

Spent an amazing last month on the islands,
on beautiful Maui before we moved to San Diego!

This is the fanciest date we've ever been on! Eeep!!
He's so handsome!

We sang and danced our hearts out with all of our
amazing friends.. really loved this night.

One of my best best best friends flew me to Puerto Rico for my birthday.
Words cannot describe this Isle of Enchantment.

After searching for a home, and then lots and lots of nights
in hotels while waiting waiting waiting to sign papers,
John bought his first home.. YAY! This was the day we got the keys.

I guess we were pretty excited about our new move to San Diego. ;)

In October, John left for a 6 month deployment in Cuba.

We found out we are having a baby girl in May, and couldn't be more thrilled.

SO! Looks like we have an exciting 2012 to look forward to, even more full of love and laughter then we ever could imagine. I know this for sure, because I jumped off a chair while I stuffed my face with grapes when the clock changed to 12AM last night!

Isn't this splendid! A few traditions I might just partake in tonight.. hope my friends are onboard too.. they think I'm coming over just for the sparklers and countdown.. ~~possibly making out with my phone when John calls~~. :)
In South America, people wear brightly colored clothes: red for those hoping for love in the new year, yellow for those wishing for money, etc.. Here is my idea of a New Years outfit yet of course I have thrown in a yogic twist coordinating the colors with the Chakras. (thanks for the idea Manduka)

In Denmark, they leap off chairs at midnight, hoping to banish all bad spirits in the new year. I think we could pull this off as long as we have a safe landing pad.. hoping my baby bump won’t mind flying through the air for a few seconds.

In the Philippines, they focus on all round things. They eat round fruits such as grapes and wear clothing with round shapes such as polka dots. The round shape mirrors the roundness of coins, as they hope for prosperity in the new year.. hmm.. I’m already round from pregnancy.. so I think I got that part covered.

In Spain, they eat 12 grapes as the clock ticks down the last 12 seconds to the New Year, interesting.. stuff your face, then kiss your lover?? Good thing John is in Cuba, I just might try this.. are you keeping track off everything here?

In Puerto Rico, they throw buckets of water out the window to "clean" the old year out. I’m thinking I’ll just go water som plants in their yard as I throw out “last years” water. <- my way of being water conscious at the same time.

I love being a yoga teacher, I love my practice, and I love that I can take a joke. A Moment with Taylor Nelson

Recently I learned a little about Taylor Nelson, a true Southern California beach gal. Have you guys seen this young lady surf? She is destined to go places with her style and grace. We had some fun as she allowed me to pick her brain so that we could all peek into her world, we are so stoked!

Elise: Okay Miss Taylor surf extraordinaire, if you were to turn your bag upside down what would we find tumbling out? Of those things, what are 3 things you cannot live without?

Taylor: If you were to turn my bag upside down, one would find tumbling out, Chapstick, pens/pencils, lotion, my Ray Bans, car keys, bobby pins, and my cell phone. Of these things, the three items I could not live with out would be my Chapstick, Ray Bans, and my car keys!

Elise: I’m a Chapstick girl too..how old are you now and at what age did you start surfing. In those years, besides yourself..who do you credit molding you into the surfer you are today?

Taylor: I am 18 years old, I learned to surf when I was 5, but didn't get into it until I was 13. I would credit Carla Rowland, Ian Zamora, my Dad, and Uncle for molding me into the surfer I am today.

Elise: That’ a great group of people! Are you sponsored, if so by who? And who do you dream of being sponsored by in the future?

Taylor: I am sponsored by Coral Reef Wetsuits, Olas Mex Grill, and Surfmonk! I dream of being sponsored in the future by a company that would support my dream to travel and surf the world! I think that my ultimate dream sponsorship would be Volcom because I love their bathing suits!

Elise: Wow Taylor, you already have a rad list of sponsors going! Stoked for you! Could you name for us a few wave sliders that truly inspire you?

Taylor: Carla Rowland because in my opinion is the best woman long boarder, her switch stance is amazing and one day I aspire to switch at least half as good as her! I also love Belinda Baggs’ graceful style, her nose riding is phenomenal.

Elise: Both those women are so inspiring, I completely agree and by the looks of it, you've got nose riding down too! What boards do you ride? Give us the juicy details..you know, shaper, size, ect.

Taylor: I surf 2 Bing boards shaped by Matt Calvani! I have a Bing Elevator, thats a 9'0 log, and the best nose riding board I have ever ridden! I also have a 4'11 quad Bing Dharma, an easy paddle shortboard perfect for surfing long point breaks with strong currents, this board is really fun because its super fast! I also surf a 5'0 soft top that belongs to my boyfriend, this board ensures a smile!

Elise: Nice little quiver going lady! So where in our beautiful world have you traveled to surf, and which of these places was your favorite?

Taylor: I’ve been to Kaua’i, Australia, Costa Rica, and all up and down the California coast to surf! My favorite spot would be Australia! I have gone twice for the Noosa Surf Festival and its an amazing place!

Elise: Are you a bikini and poncho kinda girl, or do you have closet bursting with the latest fashion trends? What is your favorite article of clothing or accessory right now?

Taylor: I am definitely a bikini and poncho type of girl, nothing makes me happier then being able to run around in my bathing suit! My favorite article of clothing would be my high waisted RVCA shorts!!

Elise: Right on! Living in California, it's more often than not that we are wearing wetsuits.. which I always tell my Hawai'i friends makes me a better paddler cause it gives me muscles. True right? Anyway..what brand of suit do you prefer and why?

Taylor: I wear Coral Reef Wetsuits! They are custom, made in the USA suits! I am super short (5’0) and always have a hard time finding suits that fit, so the fact that coral reef offers custom made suits is so awesome. Not only do they fit ridiculously well, you can design them too and choose all the colors you want!

Elise: Oh rad, I love custom made anything! What do you aspire to be one day.. you know..when you have to "grow up"?

Taylor: When I grow up I aspire to take over my Dad’s business, he owns a land surveying company, and eventually I want to open up a bathing suit boutique with my sister and possibly design bathing suits!

Elise: I’ll be excited to see what your suits look like! Time flies girl, I hope your sketching already! Anything really exciting for you coming up in 2012?

Taylor: There’s a lot of exciting stuff going on for me in 2012, lots of traveling :) In march I’ll be headed to Noosa, Australia for the Noosa Surfing Festival, and in August I’ll be off to Kaua’i with the family! I also trying to make a trip to go to Taiwan to visit a very close friend!

Last night I dreamt of this break.. Indicators-Raglan on New Zealand. What a wonderful dream it was! I haven't been here yet, and I'm actually not much of a short boarder which my Kiwi friend says is what is prevalent over there.. Guess I'll have to ask John for some short boarder tips (after the babe comes of course). Back to my dream.. We literally were hanging out in one of these houses, checking the surf from the balcony and then cruisin' in our suits to get to the beach. If dreams are a forecast of the future I'M STOKED!!!

One of my favorite things about being an ocean going gal is how my hair looks, feels, and smells after a play date with the sea. I know it might be a little crazy, but I'm one of those girls who doesn't mind the sand in my bed, or salt drying on my skin and in my hair after a good sesh..I mean yeah it's "damaging", but hair grows back right? This salty after a session feeling was more so when I lived in Hawai'i, in fact sometimes I would go for a quick session or jump in the water before work (when I had a day job) just to have the ocean with me the rest of the day.

On days where I can't make it to the ocean (eeek!) it's nice to just grab something similar from the bathroom vanity. Here are some products I have used and that I love. They insure a fresh from the salty sea hair look. Cheers!

1. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray: Smells AHmazing..gives great texture

2. Fekkai 'Beachcomber' Leave-In Conditioner: Makes waves, and also keeps them soft and has UV shield to help protect your hair! Yea!

3. GHD Sea Spray: This stuff works great IF you already have slightly wavy hair.. If I sleep on my hair to let it dry then it works great because I have 'slept in waves', if my hair is straight already for any reason..it just makes it sticky. So.. sometimes it's rad, sometimes it's yuck! I think it depends on your hair (hey I'm just being honest!)

4.Garnier Fructis Surf Hair: Great product to help get the texture if you have the time to curl for the look.. doesn't really work as a spray and scrunch obviously.. which I love the spray and scrunch method because I'm not a curling iron gal.

5. RainWater Botanicals on ETSY here: holy moly. I LOOOOVE this stuff.. organic and yummy. Seriously, I just want to smell my hair ALL day, and everyone else wants to also!

It's funny because living in Hawai'i (paradise) I always saw photos from when people would visit and it would really not effect me, I mean after all this was my everyday! Don't get me wrong.. Remember those feathers I said I was using for a project? Well I finished, whoop! SO stoked! I made a dreamcatcher for the baby's mobile! I am adding some bohemian inspired details to her nursery.. a room we will enjoy just as much as she will..hopefully! I followed a simple how to found online here.

Native Americans believe that the night air is filled with dreams both good and bad. The dream catcher when hung over or near your bed swinging freely in the night air, catches the dreams as they flow by. The good dreams know how to pass through the dream catcher slipping through the web and sliding down the soft feathers so gently that many times the sleeper does not know she or he is dreaming. The bad dreams not knowing the way get tangled in the dream catcher and perish with the first light of the new day.

Today I visited a very good friends house for crafting by the fire. We had a wonderful time crawling into the nesting house to collect fallen feathers from her Guinea hens. The feathers are being used for a little project that I am working on which will be blogged about soon I'm sure. My favorite part was eating New Zealand Christmas fruit mince! MMMmm it was SO yummy and I am really excited to try her authentic recipes myself! I love spending time with some of my favorite gals! Hope you enjoyed your Sunday! It's almost Christmas!! EEeeep!

A Moment with Margaux Arramon-Tucoo

I had a nice email exchange lately with the groovy Margaux Arramon-tucoo who is a French lady surfer I recently met at a film premier. She so graciously allowed me to pick her brain so that we could all see a glimpse into her world. Elise: Okay Miss Margaux, I’m really diggin’ your style..what are some current trends you really love?

Margaux: While traveling, I had to change my lifestyle and adapt my clothes, in California I like the way people have a very surfy Californian style. And in Australia its more vagabond, you can wear the same shirt and short every day and don’t mind about it, its salty and smells like the beach. In France, its more fancy. So it ended up being a mix of it all, depends on the day. I don’t look at trends, I make my own.

Elise: I love that last statement, truly a girl of your own.. that being said what are two things YOU think every beach going gal should have?

Margaux: First of all, SUNSCREEN! And then something to play in waves (:

Elise: Brilliant! Sunscreen.. everyone should have that! Especially beach going gals! So what are you listening to lately? Any song in particular you would like to share?

Margaux: Lately, I've been listening a lot to Lana Del Rey and lykke Li (that I've recently seen in live in LA ) But I like to listen to less known artists like: Soley, Taxi Taxi! and my friends Betty Kiwi, La Femme and Olivia Rohde. A song I would share while I am doing this interview right now would be RIPEST FRUIT by Taxi Taxi!.

Elise: Some of those artist I know, and I can’t wait to check out the others! When did you start wave riding and what sparked your interest?

Margaux: I took my first wave when I was 10 but really got into everyday surfing when I was 14, I think I would say that’s when I started surfing during the winter and winter in France is cold.. ha

Elise: We met at the US Oceanides film premier, which is such a beautiful film by Lorene Carpentier which you surf in. What is it like to see yourself on film? Does it inspire you to perfect your style?

Margaux: Lorene (Lorene Carpentier) has been trying to meet up while I was surfing in France but we were always both moving everywhere and it happened that we were in Australia at the same time last year for 3 months and with all the girls as well so it was really fun. Lorene was coming to wake us up in Noosa and we would all go surfing and Lorene would be swimming with us with a camera in her hands. I've been trying to get footage of me surfing when the waves are good and my dad loves to film every time we surf together with the Gopro. I think it is important and makes you progress for sure seeing yourself on screen. But Lorene's movie was different, I have little parts here and there between Kass (Kassia Meador) who is my mentor and some of my others best friends. I've never done any contest and this is the way I like to compare my surfing with some other very stylish and inspirational surfers.

Elise: I really loved seeing you all on film.. what a dream! Where all have you traveled in search of waves?

Margaux: I started traveling for waves last year. So I came to California for 3 months and stayed with Kassia, she took me everywhere. Then I took the plane to see the wild land in Australia and surf along their east coast. My parents also recently took me to INDO in Bali last summer before I took off to California again. At home I travel as well; I go to Spain, Portugal and I’m a child from Morocco where I've been 11 times with my family always, I can’t wait to surf there. This a very nice road trip to do when you're in Europe.

Elise: Tell us about your favorite board..shape, size, color & what makes it so special?

Margaux: I Just got a board from my shaper in July, it’s a dark purple Board, 9'2 with a nice round pin tail and a double concave.. it's a very classic board and has a portrait of a Queen on it, as my home spot belongs to a castle. I consider it to be the queen of the castle (and my friends now call me rapunzel ahah). It is the first board I’ve gotten since I shaped one with my good shaper friend, which was a board that I surfed for 3 years.

Elise: I’ll have to remember that Rapunzel.. ;) What is one thing you never leave home without when traveling?

Margaux: I always have on me two rings that my mom gave me and a note book.

Elise: I’ve seen some photos of you shaping at Shaper Studios with my good friend Chris, sweet!! How did your board come out, and what was your favorite part of the shaping process.

Margaux: Chris and his crew are the best, I had so much fun going there a few times! My board looks like I've done it ahah, which is cool. It has a few artworks on it and dirty colors everywhere on the deck. I tried it once because I had to leave, but it was too LIGHT! So next time I come Chris will put some more glass coat on it. I cannot wait to surf it again! I loved every part of it, the most amazing was seeing my drawings being glassed on it.

Elise: I bet seeing your own art on a board you shaped with your own hands is pretty awesome. Do you have any big goals for the upcoming year?

Margaux: I Have a few goals that are in progress, and one even bigger goal. I would like to come back to California during the spring in April and May to have an art show moving from San Francisco to San Diego. My sponsors RVCA, Stance and Keep-a-Breast are keen to help me, so I just have to keep my brain and hands working for now. I also decided to get a driving lesson! Ha

Taxi Taxi! 'Ripest Fruit'

One of my favorite things about coming to visit home is spending time with the ladies..the hen ladies that is. They are always SO excited to have a visitor in the coop, and talk to you the whole time! I swear you could sit in there and tell them all your worries and they'd understand.. some day on my dream farm, I will have free range hens! They will hang out with me as I hang our clothes on the line. (These poor ladies can only come out under supervision because of the Chicken Hawks)

I just love raindrops on shamrocks.. I also love that the leaves are hearts.

Don't tell the other hens, but this sweet girl is my favorite..
mostly because she loves back.

Oyster shell ensures they have sufficient calcium in their bodies to form perfect little egg shells.

Of course the best reward after spending time with them is finding the sweet little eggs they have laid and carrying them to the kitchen in your skirt.

Freshly Juiced

I absolutely love juice that is freshly squeezed.. or in today's case freshly juiced using a juicer! We busted out the MEGA juicer which is commercial grade and made a ton of fresh orange juice today. YUM. This really excites me because oranges are good for your skin, bones, teeth, digestive system, not to mention the blood and oxygen in our bodies. I pretty much just got a good 5 oranges in my one glass. Uh hello world..watch out, superwoman here! SO stoked!

On a side note, if you are interested in a commercial grade juicer please let me know as we have decided this juicer is a little bit too much for home use. It has only been used two times since we got it. It is a Nutrifaster N450. Hope your weekend is a beautiful one!

Pura Vida "Chapter One"

Are you ready for this? A few years ago one of my most beloved friends and I spontaneously jetted off to S. America in search of waves. I decided I would type out my exact journal with the true accounts of how it all played out. One of my goals is to someday finish typing out the whole thing, put it all together and call it a book. Wanna read the first chapter? It's a rough draft, and not a word has been changed from my original journal.. Well, you've already gotten this far haven't you?

Chapter One

Pura Vida

Collecting good vibes from the islands, as the clouds carry rain drops to the tip of Kaena Point. I’m caught in a trance, as a turtle takes in a fresh breath of air just within reaching distance of me. The turquoise and cobalt blue water compliment each other and the ocean seems to flirt with herself. A sand crab is teased by the sea lapping to come and play, the waves which seem so big to him are so tempting..but he scurries back to safety, tickling the sand with his feet. An imaginary canvas in my head is smeared with color and intensity. The rich blues, tropical greens, skin colored sand, and browns of the earth. I am at peace here, this is my home, Oahu, yet something is calling for me to go..but where? Someplace far with sand, sun, salt water, and inspiration. Somewhere raw, with friendly people, an abundance of animals I’ve never imagined and overgrown with tropical plants, I’m yearning for that cultural difference, a challenge.

My meditation is broken by the vibration of my cell, and I smile as I pick up. “Aloha Heather! I think its time we plan this surf trip..” I go on babbling about my intimate meeting I’ve just had at Pueana Point, one of our favorite breaks, and how inspired and creative I feel, and she invites me to come and hang out. I cruise along Ali’i beach and turn left at the bus stop with the cross walk, it’s how I remember it’s the right street to her house. The passing rain has filled the air with tropical smells and I pick a perfect fallen plumeria from the grass to tuck behind my ear.

As I arrive at Heather’s house I am greeted by the neighbors 2 ton (or so it looks) pot belly pig, whom after noticing I didn’t come baring gifts of food hardly seems to care I’m there, and Charlie her black and white fat cat, who is purring at the foot her surf sticker decorated door. He’s always so happy to see a visitor, because any friend of Heather’s is a friend of Charlie’s too. The door swings open and she blurts out “Yaaay Elise is here! I’m so glad you are here!”

Heather is a petite tan surfer girl, with long blonde hair that lands just at her waist, she always has a smile and a hug, and more often then not a smudge of paint somewhere on her skin or clothes. Her house is cozy, and makes you feel like your straight out of a vintage surf flick. A quiver of logs (a term used for a heavy longboard) line the ceiling beams, skateboards of all sizes impatiently wait by the door, next to her vans and slippers. The colors she has painted her abode are calm and soothing, and raffia mats cover the floor. The place is small with 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. One room she uses as her studio, and is filled with secrets that I excitedly beg to peek at. The kitchen hosts a stove top and smaller than normal fridge, which fits in her pad perfectly. “Do you want some tea?” Heather asks as I sink into her mushy purple couch. We decide that tonight we will go bomb a freshly paved road just outside the land that her parents bought, before we grab sushi at Banzai, our favorite place. We chat for a while then scoop up the boards and do some serious concrete surfing. After a few crashes and some them some sake to heal the pain at the sushi joint, we set up to paint in Heather’s living room. Both she and I were born on March 27th, we love to surf, dive, skate, travel and most of all.. paint. We bounced ideas off each other as we plan out our trip to Costa Rica. The thing thats so ironic was that there isn’t much planning to be done. All we want to know was how we are getting there and when. Pavones, which is considered the ‘second longest left in the world’ is a priority on this trip, and to any goofy footed surfer this is also considered heaven. So Costa Rica it is, a mysterious land far away with salt water, surf, tropical plants, animals, and friendly non-english speaking people.

Hello lovely blog readers!
Wow, it is HOT in San Diego! Usually I just open a door to get a nice ocean breeze, but I am not sure where the wind is hiding. But that is the least of my concerns because I am getting ready for a groovy little solo show coming up in Encinitas this month! I am so honored to have been asked to show my art at this gathering! The details are to come soon, so for now I am working away to have a whole new collection of work to release! Hope everyone is enjoying their week, I cannot believe it is already Thursday!

YOGA

It seems that there are a lot of people out there that confuse YOGA with "working out". It's National Yoga month.. before you get into your next down dog..pick up a book and do some research! The asana (postures which give you the physical strength you desire) came way after the vast 'knowledge' that a lot of "yogis" know nothing about. Nearly 100 years ago, you weren't even allowed to show up to be taught the physical part of Yoga until you had an understanding of the teachings of Yoga. Some were turned away for YEARS before they did their first Tadasana (mountain pose). The asana was and is a way to focus your mind on one thing.. a so called vehicle for meditation. Although we are stoked to gain a nice legs, back, arms, and ass out of the practice, there is so much more to this sacred practice than we give credit in some studios. It is us the teachers of Yoga, who should be sharing this knowledge in class.. rather than starting a class saying "are you guys ready for a good workout?!" ..I'm not saying I know a lot.. the truth is I'm on the edge looking out at an infinite amount of knowledge and understanding that I yearn to know and understand. What I am saying is that I am having a hard time finding a studio that seems to be "Teaching Yoga" for the right reasons.. again.. I'm not saying there is a right or a wrong, but of you want to get a good workout on a mat then go to Pilates or go to a gym! There you can chat with your girlfriends about getting drinks right after class (polluting the body you just cleansed) , and talk about your ass (because it's oh so important), and clap at the end of your workout (WTF?). Yoga Studios are Sanctuaries.. the removing the shoes thing and not bringing your hot pink cell phone into the room are RESPECT things! The not leaving in the middle of a class is a respect thing! If you can't dedicate an hour to your practice than come another day when you can! I'm not usually one to get this bothered.. but can someone please point me in the direction of a studio with standards that Krishnamacharya would be proud of? If any of my blog readers would like a book recommended, or heck.. if you'd like me to ship you one out of my personal library so that you can see what I speak of, it's really quite enlightening. No pun intended.

The Wall and It's New Flavor

Ever since we moved in I have been searching the internet (mostly Pinterest) for ideas on the living room wall. I knew that we should use the spectacular canned lighting for our guitars, since John and I love to play, but there need be some color on that wall! After lots of thought we headed to the HD and I stood in front of the paint chips for probably half an hour. After I thought I had it figured out I rang my mom to get her advice and ended up going with completely different colors than I myself had picked. John was just there saying "It's just paint babe, if we don't like it we can try again." So incredibly sweet I know! We finally left the store with good ol' Martha Stewart colors..I know some hate to admit it but the woman's a genius! We chose 'Brook Trout' in a flat enamel and her precious metals collection color 'Marshland', which has a slight shimmer to it. We absolutely LOVE how it turned out, and although there are still some details to be added, furniture, pictures, trinkets and a little more "nesting" to be done to make it feel home-like..I had to share! So.. what do you think?

The Newness

Night Blooming Jasmine!

When I lived in Paia, Maui.. my landlord had a beautiful garden. Right outside my bedroom was a night blooming jasmine and I promised myself that someday I would have one of my own. The romantic fragrant flowers begin to bloom every night just after dusk..mmm they make my heart melt! Cestrum nocturnum, Night-blooming Cestrum, Lady of the Night, Queen of the Night, Night-blooming jessamine, and Night-blooming Jasmine.. call it what you will.. I REALLY want to find one for the balcony just outside our bedroom! The shrub is native to the West Indies and caribbean islands.. and is also found in New Zealand, which are both places I want to visit..so until I can get there I can close my eyes and pretend. Can't you just imagine me laying in a hammock in the lusciousness of New Zealand. (<--spoken in my friend Helen's beautiful accent) Until I can find one,I'll continue using my Night Blooming Jasmine body wash from Bath & Body Works. :) Now excuse me while I go daydream of this perfect plant!

Sunday Sweet Sunday

Today John and I spent the day gawking at beautiful horses and not to mention beautiful horsemanship! We attended the California Dressage Association's biggest show of the season in Del Mar and then walked across the street to catch the Sunday Polo Match! It was such a relaxing and fun day, I was so excited that my beau totally loved watching the horses, which always makes me a happy girl. I hope your weekend was as splendid as mine was!

Since we're staying downtown San Diego in a hotel, we decided we would check out the scene! Where we will be moving is pretty far from the Gaslamp where there's a rad bowling place called "East Village Tavern & Bowl". Here was our Thursday night bowling date.. John beat me by over double! Looks like I'm a better Wii bowler.. heh heh.

Padres Game for the Birthday Boy!

My darling mother and step dad were so kind and got John tickets to the San Diego Padres game for his birthday. We had so much fun cheering them on, and it was a great game with a victory over the LA Dodgers! Funny enough, one of our first dates was opening day in the same stadium watching the same two teams, with the Padres of course kicking booty that time too! Thanks Mom & Jess, we had tons of fun last night! :)

John's Surprise Birthday Party

Since we've moved to San Diego, we haven't had a lot of time to go out and play and hang with friends. Things have been pretty busy with John starting his new job and I'm a painting and yoga crazed lil' lady! So yesterday, which was John's birthday, I decided to throw him a surprise party with all the friends I could muster up in our hotel room. (Which we are still living in while we wait for move in day). Hope the photos bring a little smile to your face, I was giggling for hours hanging out with my new buddies until he FINALLY got home from work!
