Happy Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, we spent sweet time in our garden as a family. John planted our sprouting salad greens in the vertical garden he built, and Harlow helped momma plant the sprouting cantaloupe. Spring time is my absolute favorite and this year our garden is feeling more luscious than last year, exciting huh?!  It was such a beautiful day today, so we also ventured out to a local garden and a walk down to the beach. Let's be honest here though, everyday is earth day in this home. We hope Harlow grows to live by Thich Nhat Hahn's idea of "The Two Promises", understanding and compassion. You can read more in his book "Planting Seeds".

It's a really beautiful thing to see your child's face light up when she is immersed in nature. My wish tonight as I write this post to the sound of probably 200 frogs in the creek at the edge of our neighborhood (no joke), is that we as a society start thinking of everyday at Earth Day, so that our children and their children can enjoy the earth the way we do. Here are a few easy ideas to get you inspired to take care of our planet along with us.

- Every time you go for a surf or take a trip to the beach or park, set aside 5 minutes to show your gratitude towards Mother Nature by picking up some litter. Keep a pair of garden gloves in your car if your worried about touching yucky things. ;)

- Plant a bee and butterfly garden, or spread some wildflower seeds. Keep it organic with no pesticides. Honey Bees keep our planet healthy!

- If you aren't already, start recycling. Depending on your state, you could make a pretty penny while helping minimize manufacturing of "new trash".

- Be conscious about your water use. Turn off the water when you brush your teeth, use the "quick wash" setting on your laundry and dish washers. (I promise it still gets clean!)

Happy Earth Day!
