This week I am thrilled to have been able to chat a little with Kaua'i wedding photographer Blenda Montoro. So you want to know what it's like to be a successful, and blissful photographer? Well then read on!
|The Beautiful Blenda Montoro|
Elise: Aloha Sweet Blenda! Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions for SaltWaterDiary readers! So, as a photographer myself, it's always the first question that pops to mind..what do you shoot with?
Blenda: I love and prefer working with Canon. I have a Mark II and a 50D. I also like to use the Canon professional L series lenses. My favorite is
the 50mm f1.2 85mmm f1.2 and my telephoto 70-200mm . I have other lenses but these are my favorites.
|Hard at Work!|
Elise: I’m a Canon girl too. Who or what inspires your beautiful work?
Blenda: I always say that love is my muse. It starts at home. My relationship with my husband inspires me because we love each other so much.
I am also inspired by couples promising forever to each other, expectant mothers watching their bellies grow, and kids' purity and innocence. I believe that each of us has a story and it's inspirational that I can capture that laugh, that love, that moment.

Elise: Beautiful, I love that it starts at home for you, that’s really such a sweet thing to say! How would you describe your photography style?
Blenda: My motto is classic, chic, and contemporary and I strive to embody these ideas in my work. I try to tell a story through my photos that is modern yet ethereal. I also try to remain true to who my clients are while I remain true to my style.
Elise: Living on Kaua’i is so amazing, I miss the beauty and enchantment of that island everyday! What is your favorite location on Kaua’i to shoot.. Jungle, beach, building, etc. and why?
Blenda: That is a hard question to answer because Kaua'i, as you say, is so enchanting. But if I have to choose, I would say that the North Shore of Kauai is my favorite area to shoot. Specifically I love Tunnels Beach, Na Aina Kai Gardens, and a few secret spots. :)
Elise: Mmm secret spots, those are the best! Where have you traveled with your camera in tote, and which of these places was your favorite place to photograph?
Blenda: I have traveled to Peru, my home country, South Africa and Mexico. In the United States, I have photographed mostly in California since I spent eight years there. I also took my camera to Telluride, Colorado; Portland, Oregon; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Las Vegas, Nevada; Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Spokane, Washington and Texas. In Hawaii, I have done shoots in Oahu, Maui, and Kaua'i. My favorite place to photograph by far was South Africa because of the beauty of the people, the culture, landscapes, and the amazing safaris..
Elise: Wow, you’ve been a lot of really beautiful places! Your focus seems to be on sweet sweet lovers, I notice lots of weddings and engagements on your site, are you more drawn to capture these events?
Blenda: Wedding photography is what I want to focus on because that is what I enjoy doing the most. Also I got married two years ago and I still remember all the emotions, the details, and the effort that my husband and I put into the wedding. I can relate to the couples I photograph because of that experience. In other types of photography, the people are more posed. I love that wedding photography and engagement sessions are more about raw emotions and love rather than just posing people. If I do families and babies portrait sometimes I like to make it different, I like to see people interacting and connecting.
Elise: I do love all the candid or raw shots in your portfolio. It tells the story much more beautifully than posed photos. Do you yourself have a favorite artist/photographer?
Blenda: Yes, it's Jose Villa. He's one of the top ten wedding photographers in the world. I actually had the opportunity to meet him in person. I went to a workshop with him in Maui at the end of January and I learned so much from him. He's not only a wonderful artist but he's also a wonderful person. I love the fact that he has kept his humility amidst all of his success.
Elise: Wow, he practically came to your doorstep! How amazing! Being a photographer, you must witness fashion trends coming and going, what is a current trend you are really loving?

Elise: Vintage is my thing too! Living in Hawai’i you've got to be a beach girl, what are a few things you think every beach going gal should have in her bag?
Blenda: A point-and-shoot camera for sure (or if you're happy with the one your phone has even better because then you can use one of my favorite apps..Instagram), sunblock, chapstick, a book, sunglasses, a beach hat, and of course some chocolates ;)
Elise: Oh girl! You just mentioned chocolates to a preggo gal, I think I need to make a store run now! ;) What advice could you share with new photographers who might look up to and your work? (I am especially excited for this answer!!)
Blenda: Be original. Define what kind of photographer you want to be since there are many kinds. Balance your work with something to release your muscle tension and stress. I love to run and practice yoga. Become a photographer because it is your passion. It is a photographer's passion that brings life to their photography. Some people might think photography is an easy way to make money, but it requires a lot of time and energy. A photographer is not just someone who takes pictures but also someone who edits pictures, interacts with clients, and runs their own business. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Stay true to who you are and always remain humble. Most importantly, enjoy your journey because it is fun for sure.
Elise: I’m feeling as if I should frame that and put it in my studio, it fits quite well with being an artist also! Thank you Blenda so much for this opportunity to chat, as I know you are a very busy woman!
